Carmel Golden Rectangle Cottage

Location:

Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA

This Carmel cottage is a carefully calibrated update of a beloved mid-century coastal home originally designed in 1949. The design brief balanced the desire for a cozy, intimate retreat for a professional couple with the need for generous spaces suitable for entertaining and everyday life.

PROJECT DATA:

  • Location: Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

  • Size: 1900 SF

  • Timeline: ~16 months (closing to completion)

Engblom Architecture guided the renovation to preserve and enhance the cottage’s original charm while introducing modern conveniences and spatial clarity. The project spatially organizes living, dining, and entertaining spaces around a south-facing courtyard, creating a sequence of indoor–outdoor moments framed by landscape and natural light. Thoughtful landscape integration conceals outdoor living areas from the street, while garden plantings — including jasmine, cedar, and laurels — reinforce a sense of privacy and retreat.

The interior is warm and welcoming, with a great room anchored by an original fireplace, custom chef’s kitchen, and floor-to-ceiling steel doors that strengthen connections to the exterior. Materials and detailing were selected to support a relaxed California lifestyle, enhancing both everyday comfort and social gathering spaces.

Delivered over a 16-month design and construction process, the Carmel Golden Rectangle Cottage exemplifies how careful interventions and a restrained material palette can revitalize a cherished home while honoring its coastal heritage and context.
