Twin Peaks House
Location:
San Francisco, CA
Perched above the San Francisco skyline on the Pemberton Steps, the Twin Peaks House is a thoughtful renovation of a mid-century modern home originally built in 1949 with a 1959 upper addition. The existing structure had strong volume and views, but its interior organization and systems no longer supported contemporary living.
Engblom Architecture led the renovation strategy, reorganizing the home to enhance spatial clarity, embrace its architectural legacy, and improve connections to the outdoors. Public functions — living, dining, and kitchen — are located on the upper level to capture sweeping views, while the lower level accommodates the primary suite and guest rooms with a sense of privacy and calm. Seamless transitions to the rear garden support relaxed indoor–outdoor living.

The design balances a timeless aesthetic with modern functionality, honoring the home’s mid-century roots while updating systems and finishes for everyday use. Material restraint, careful proportion, and an emphasis on light and flow create a serene, warm environment that enriches both daily life and entertaining.
Delivered from deal close to occupancy within 12 months, the Twin Peaks House demonstrates how measured interventions can reinvigorate a beloved home, clarify its spatial logic, and reinforce its relationship to context and view.
